The Dos and Don’ts of Skirts
Posted on November 20th, 2010

We absolutely love skirts. They are just as versatile as pants, meaning you can pair them with all kinds of different tops and shoes, but they are cute and feminine. Skirts are great in summer, showing off those tanned legs and polished toes, but they are just as great in winter – we adore the combination of a wool skirt, a pair of dark tights and knee-high boots.

Which skirt is the best for you? It depends on your body type and on your personal taste. An A-line skirt is a great choice for most of us, because it is universally flattering – everyone looks good wearing a slight A-line. Just like boot cut pants, it balances out your body shape.

A pencil skirt can be a bit more challenging, especially if you’re pear-shaped. However, a well-constructed wool pencil skirt that’s not too tight can have a nice, elongating effect, especially when worn with heels, so don’t rule it out completely.

Another tricky option is a full skirt. We see more of them right now in stores, inspired by the “back to the fifties” trend of ultra-feminine silhouettes. While a full skirt with a cinched waist is very feminine, it can also add bulk, so make sure it’s not too full, and wear it with a form-fitting top to balance out the skirt.

When it comes to length, we’re lucky these days because we can pretty much choose whatever length we want. Mini, maxi and anything in between are readily available, and while mid-calf length is a hot trend right now, don’t feel obliged to wear it – it can be an unflattering length if your legs are not long and lean, so go with whatever works for you. The classic skirt length is of course knee length – either slightly above or slightly below.
